Woodley grew up around its aerodrome. Before the 1930s it was a scattering of homes on the edge of Sonning parish, but once Miles Aircraft and the flying school arrived, the town expanded fast. After the war, more firms moved out from Reading and housing followed. When flying stopped, the airfield itself became homes and light industry in the 1980s, and more recently the former Bulmershe university campus has been redeveloped as a new estate.
