Up on the Chiltern plateau, a few miles north of Caversham, this South Oxfordshire village has a feel all of its own. What was once common grazing land belonging to the old parish of Sonning grew into a village of its own, and the countryside around it, part of the Chilterns National Landscape, is a patchwork of beech woods, hedgerows and farmland. That setting is lovely to live in, but it is hard on the outside of a house. Leaves, beech mast and twigs fill gutters, shaded roofs grow moss, and mud from country lanes finds its way onto drives and paths. The village had only a few dozen houses in 1900, so most homes here are twentieth-century, with several estates added in the 1960s and 1970s. Nearly everything is one or two storeys, from detached houses and semis to bungalows, usually in generous gardens with hedges and trees on the boundary. Bungalows bring long gutter runs and large roof areas close to the ground, while older brick-and-flint cottages in neighbouring hamlets such as Kidmore End and Rotherfield Peppard need a gentler approach. Because the area sits on chalk, the local water is hard, and windows cleaned with tap water soon show it. Roads out here are narrow and parking can be limited, so our ground-based poles and vacuum, which work at a distance from the van, suit the area well.
