Today's town is really four villages joined together. Little Sandhurst, Central Sandhurst, College Town and Owlsmoor grew separately in the 1800s, helped along by the Royal Military College, the railway and big employers such as Wellington College and Broadmoor, and then from the late 1950s to the 1980s new housing estates filled the gaps between them. The River Blackwater runs along the southern edge, with a string of lakes and Trilakes Country Park beside it, while to the north lie Edgbarrow Woods, Wildmoor Heath and the protected bogs and heaths towards Owlsmoor. The soil is sandy, and fir and pine plantations are never far away. Low ground near water holds mist and moisture, and heath and woodland mean shade and leaf fall.
